We are grateful for the numerous Reiki Master Teachers who have
provided the following information.  Blessings~
1. What is Reiki and how does it work? Is it massage?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction & relaxation that promotes healing
that is based on UNIVERSAL LIFE FORCE ENERGY. It is usually a laying-on of hands
technique thousands of years old - but is not massage. There is no manipulation of
muscles. It is a channeled life force energy that’s at a higher vibration and frequency.
REI in Japanese means: spiritual wisdom that comes from God. And KI means in
Japanese: Life energy or universal life force in all living things. When weak you get sick.
Reiki, in part, works along similar lines of other Eastern healing methods. These
methods view us as having a 'life force energy' that moves in pathways and centers
and points of the body. The perspective is that if the energy is moving freely then we are
in harmony, free from discomfort and dis-ease. If the energy is out of balance or
blocked then we experience disharmony, pain, disease, etc.
The word "Reiki" is Japanese in origin and can be understood by looking at its two
parts. The 'Ki" part of the word means "life force energy" and is similar to the Chinese
word for "Chi" which we may be more familiar with when we hear about Tai Chi etc. The
"Rei" part of the word means 'the intelligence that guides the universe' which is
labelled many different ways such as "Spirit", "God", Creator, Universal Intelligence etc.
So, putting the two parts of the word together brings us the meaning of Reiki as "
Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy". This energy moves through a practitioner to the
person receiving the energy and is guided by spirit in a way that returns the life force
energy to a state of balance or restoration of health.
Reiki happens with a fully clothed client and the touch is very light or even occurring in
the space around and not directly on the body.
Massage is different in that the soft tissue of the body is moved, manipulated to focus
on the physical body primarily. Reiki benefits are often noted in the body,as well, as
emotional peace, mental clarity and spiritual calm.
begins the corrective healing for the greater good. Everyone and everything can benefit from Reiki. (pets, plants, automobiles).
Reiki is both powerful and gentle. In its long history of use it has aided in healing virtually every known illness and injury
including serious problems like: multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and cancer as well as skin problems, cuts, bruises, broken
bones, headache, colds, flu, sore throat, sunburn, fatigue, insomnia, impotence, poor memory, lack of confidence, etc. In it is
always beneficial and works to improve the effectiveness of all other types of therapy. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing
radiance and has many benefits for both client and practitioner, including altered states of consciousness and spiritual
experiences. If a client has a health condition, and wants to be treated with Reiki, it is recommended that they do so under the
supervision of an enlightened medical doctor or other health care professional. Reiki will improve the results of all medical
treatment, acting to reduce negative side effects, shorten healing time, reduce or eliminate pain, reduce stress, and help create
optimism.

3. How does Reiki work with Western Medicine?
Reiki is not a medical treatment. Reiki supports the paradigm emerging in Western medicine. That paradigm includes
preventive care, mind/body awareness and natural healing. Reiki is the least complicated, truest and most effective technique
for wellness, as it is an excellent compliment to Western medicine. It is holistic in nature and will not adversely interfere with any
drug, diagnosis, or belief system. It is untainted, intelligent, and it cannot be manipulated. Moreover, Reiki gives all the powers
to heal to the recipient. Most importantly, the practitioner holds no power over the patient.
Reiki is often used in combination with Western Medicine. It is reported to lessen side effects of medicine (such as
chemotherapy) and many people use it to actually bless their medicine and vitamins. It has also been used to speed wound
healing and support surgery recovery and lessen effects of anesthesia.

4. What kinds of questions should I ask a practitioner when I'm trying to find the right one?
The quality of Reiki that a practitioner or teacher channels is directly related to their orientation to the Spiritual nature of the work,
their ongoing relationship with Spirit which is evident in their daily lives, and their finer inner qualities.
Reiki healing ability is not based upon contemporary education (for instance, medical people are not necessarily better
qualified). Quality Reiki healing is not based upon who our teacher was, where our office is, who we know, how many books
we've read or written, or how well traveled we are. There are gifted Reiki Providers whose outward circumstances are
impressive, but bear in mind that ‘the clothes don’t make the healer’. I suggest that a seeker ask themselves: Does this
Provider seem to live an over-all loving and non-judgmental life? How enthusiastic is s/he about Reiki? When you interact, do
you feel accepted and encouraged? Excited and inspired? Is the provider consciously working their Spiritual path? Look for
these kinds of qualities. Avoid ones who promise specific healing results from Reiki ~ Reiki is guided by Spirit, who knows you
better than anyone, and who will provide what is exactly in line with your Highest Good.
One good way to learn about a Provider is to have them give you a Reiki session, either in person or by distant healing (Reiki II
Practitioners and above have learned the Reiki method of sending Distance Reiki). Experience first-hand the fruit of their work.
Many practitioners are willing to be 'interviewed' by phone before scheduling an appointment. I am often asked things like: How
long have you been practicing? What kinds of situations do people come to you with? What can I expect from a treatment? How
long is the appt? How much do you charge? How often do I need to come? What is your training?
Choose a teacher or practitioner based upon the love, compassion, and dedication they radiate, by their conscious orientation
to the Spiritual foundation of Reiki, and by their ability to set aside personal ego and results orientation so to allow Spirit free
reign. Look at the fruit of their work! Choose a Reiki Provider who believes in miracles!

5. How and where does one get Reiki training?
Reiki training is provided around the World…

6. What is involved in Reiki training?
Reiki Training can be different from teacher to teacher as far as what all is covered . REIKI is transferred to the student by the
REIKI Master. REIKI Master tunes in the student to receive the REIKI energy.
Reiki is learned in degrees. The process of learning Reiki involves what is called an attunement. This is an ancient ceremony
that a Reiki Master performs with the students, it is a power transfer that can only be applied by a traditionally trained Reiki
Master that opens the energy channels and finely tunes the body's electromagnetic field.
Reiki I: First Degree is the initial opening and refining of the Reiki channel. It is a hands-on ability to heal. The energy will radiate
from your hands, so you can do a treatment on someone who either doesn't want to be touched, or cannot be, such as a burn
victim. This ability to heal depends on you being with the person you are treating. You learn the Reiki hand positions; giving a
complete Reiki treatment.
Reiki II: The Second Degree attunements empower the First Degree energy to do additional things. You are able to disconnect
from linear time... to tie into infinite time and space. This means you can send the energy infinite distances, instantly. You can
do absentee healing. The energy is also able to heal mental and emotional illness and untangle energy blocks in the mind or
body. As with First Degree, you have an unlimited supply of this energy, which allows you do absentee healing on more than
one person at a time if you wish. You learn the Reiki II symbols and how to use them; using Reiki to heal unwanted habits;
distant healing.
Reiki IIIa (or A.R.T.): This level increases the strength of your Reiki energy. You learn & are attuned to the Usui Master symbol
which increases the effectiveness of the Reiki II symbols and can be used for healing; advanced techniques for using Reiki to
solve problems and achieve goals; the use of crystals and stones for Reiki; how to make a Reiki grid that will continue to send
Reiki to yourself and others after it is charged; Reiki aura clearing; and a Moving/Grounding Meditation, as well as a Symbol
Meditation, Psychic Surgery -- which is extremely powerful for removing difficult blocks.
Reiki IIIb Master Training: You learn and are attuned to - two Tibetan symbols; the complete Reiki Usui Tibetan Master
attunement; instruction on how to do all Reiki attunements; the Healing attunement; two additional Tibetan symbols for a total of
six.

7. Is Reiki a religion or connected with a specific religion?
Reiki is not a religion, It has no dogma. It works without precepts or ego. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT YOUR HANDS ON
YOURSELF OR ANOTHER AND THE HEALING ENERGY OF THE UNIVERSE BEGINS TO FLOW.

8. Will Reiki interfere with my religion?
Many people find that the total loving Reiki energy puts them more in touch with whatever religion they follow.
People of all religious and spiritual perspectives study Reiki and say that it enhances their spiritual/religious practice whatever
that may be.

9. What is an attunement?
Reiki is not taught the way other healing techniques are taught. It is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master during an
attunement process. This process opens the crown, heart, and palm chakras and creates a special link between the student
and Reiki source.
The Reiki attunement is a powerful spiritual experience. The attunement energies are channeled into the student through the
Reiki Master. The process is guided by the Rei or God-consciousness and makes adjustments in the process depending on
the needs of each student. The attunement is also attended by Reiki guides and other spiritual beings who help implement the
process. Many report having mystical experiences involving personal messages, healings, visions, and past life experiences.
The attunement can also increase psychic sensitivity. Students often report experiences involving: opening of the third eye,
increased intuitive awareness, and other psychic abilities after receiving a Reiki attunement.
The Reiki attunement can start a cleansing process that affects the physical body as well as the mind and emotions. Toxins
that have been stored in the body may be released along with feelings and thought patterns that are no longer useful.
Therefore, a process of purification prior to the attunement is recommended to improve the benefit one receives.
An attunement is a ceremony where the Reiki teacher is a channel for the Reiki energy to be introduced to the student. In this
ceremony the students energy centers open and receive the Reiki energy. The attunement raises the energetic vibration of the
student to match the vibrational frequencey of the Reiki healing ray of energy. Most describe the attunement as a very moving,
spiritual experienc.
Four things distinguish the Reiki healing system from other healing systems:
1)The lineage....the Reiki teacher can trace their teachers all the way back to the founder of Reiki...Mikao Usui
2)It is taught by an attunement
3)It is spiritually guided
4)It can never cause harm

10. Does it tire you to offer Reiki?
As Reiki moves through the practitioner for the client, they receive the benefit of the energy, as well. It is important to note that the
practitioner is the conduit of the Reiki energy coming through. They are not giving you their own energy. And as healing occurs,
the practitioner is not responsible for the healing. The Reiki energy in partnership with the client does the healing. The
practitioner merely holds the space for that to happen.

11. Can you pick up a client's illness or issues when you give them Reiki?
One of the reasons you can do no harm with Reiki is because Reiki is the natural flow of the energy. It is the way the energy
works. We are beginning to understand it. There is research now that is creating scientific evidence. You allow the energy to do
what it would normally do, so there is no way you can force it to go a different way and create harm. Our bodies naturally tend to
heal if only we give it space and time to. And Reiki allows for the energy to do that. You really can never harm with Reiki.

12. I have heard there are people who do healing work in the state of Iowa, but how do I find them?
There are many different places to find practitioners in Iowa. One way is through the internet, also through the Iowa Reiki
Practitioners Directory.  Another place to connect with Reiki practitioners is through referral by other alternative care practitioners
or by checking at your local health food stores or esoteric bookstores.
The Office of Alternative Medicine, through the National Institute of Health is currently doing research on the use of Reiki with
patients with fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions. You can look for Reiki research on-line. Several of the books in the
book list refer to studies that have been done. The sample may be small but the research is documented. Not many allopathic
physicians avail themselves of research outside of their general area of expertise.
Word of mouth is always helpful and 'New Age' bookstores often have cards and flyers of classes and practitioners. Many
massage therapists are also Reiki practitioners and so this may be reflected in the yellow pages. Healing Centers and
Colleges of Massage and other healing methods often can help you locate Reiki practitioners. And, probably most important,
many say that Reiki finds them when they are ready to experience it...just one of the fun mystical things that can happen for us
on a healing path.

13. I asked my doctor about this stuff and he said it’s not scientifically proven and none of this is scientifically proven.
There is actually a lot of research that is now available from using Reiki with others. The Office of Alternative Medicine, through
the National Institute of Health is currently doing research on the use of Reiki with patients with fibromyalgia and other chronic
pain conditions. You can look for Reiki research on-line. Several of the books in the book list refer to studies that have been
done. The sample may be small but the research is documented.
The website:
reikimedresearch.com lists several current Reiki research projects underway. While the research may be
considered preliminary this is changing fast. Many hospitals have Reiki components and there are many case studies out
there. The rigorous research is now being conducted.
